PoliticsLHC turns down petition against anti-government protests

LAHORE/ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Monday rejected a petition seeking to halt January 17 protests against the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N)-led government.

The Chief of Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) Dr Tahir-ul-Qadri has announced to launch an anti-government movement over Model Town Tragedy from January 17 while Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) have also expressed their willingness to participate in it.

The advocate AK Dogar had filed a petition in the LHC, arguing that the announcement to stage sit-ins against the incumbent government is illegal and against the act-124 of the Constitution.

The petitioner said that the LHC should give the verdict against holding of any protest as it may spread anarchy across the Country.

However, the LHC’s Justice Shahid Kareem today rejected the petition filed against the protests.

The protest call was given by the PAT Chief Tahir-ul-Qadri after the All Parties Conference’s (APC) deadline ended on January 7 for the resignation of the Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif and the Law Minister Rana Sanaullah over their alleged involvement in the Model Town Carnage.

Meanwhile addressing a Press Conference in Islamabad, the PPP leader Qamar Zaman Kaira said that we will participate in the protests against the government.

“We demanded CM Punjab’s resignation and we will continue to demand,” he said.

Qamar Zaman Kaira said that we will hold meeting tomorrow (Tuesday) and devise the future strategy.

The PPP leader Senator Aitzaz Ahsan said that now this protest isn’t only limited to model town incident. He said that good governance in Punjab is in worse condition whereas the Punjab police is serving Shahbaz Sharif as private servant.
