KARACHI, Pakistan: The election of Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) will be conducted by late January or early February next year, said Provincial Election Commissioner Sindh Tanvir Zaki on Tuesday.

Talking to media, he said that the election for the third phase of Local Government Election-2015 in Karachi on December 05 concluded in a peaceful, fair and transparent manner.

He informed that the schedule for the election of Mayor and Deputy Mayor will be announced after the polling on reserved seats and re-election in those Union Committees (UCs) where voting could not take place due to any reasons.

He pointed out that there are several UCs where polling either did not take place or polling process could not be completed due to the death of candidate or other reasons. The polling in such UCs will be conducted soon, he added.

Tanvir Zaki said that the 209 chairmen elected from six districts of Karachi will elect candidates on KMC’s reserved seats for women, peasants, youth and minorities.

He said there is 33 per cent ratio of reserved seats for women and 5 per cent each for peasants, youth and minorities.

Giving details, he said that there is a system of Union Committees in Urban areas of the city and a separate system of Union Councils under Karachi District Council for the Rural parts of the metropolis.

He said that there are 209 Union Committees and 38 Union Councils in Karachi.

There are two 2 reserved seats for women, one each for peasant, youth and minorities in every Union Committee/Union Council.
