PoliticsImran seeks apology from ECP, Contempt of Court Case disposed off

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The Chairman Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Imran Khan on Thursday tendered a written apology to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) which the latter accepted, paving the way to end the Contempt of Court Case.

Imran Khan accompanied by his Counsel Babar Awan, Jahangir Khan Tareen, Fawad Chaudhry and Naeem-ul-Haq appeared before the ECP in Islamabad earlier in the morning in the Contempt of Court Case as per the directives of the Commission.

The Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Justice (retd) Sardar Muhammad Raza asked Babar Awan to tender a written apology signed by Imran Khan over his derogatory remarks against the Commission.

Imran Khan eventually signed the apology statement after consultation with his legal team

The ECP accepted Imran Khan’s apology and disposed off the Contempt Of Court Case against him.

Later talking to media outside the ECP, Imran Khan expressed the pleasure that the Contempt of Court Case had ended now. He said that his criticism over the Election Commission was meant to make the institution transparent and trust able.

The PTI Chief said that it was caused by a misunderstanding, adding that he never intended to ridicule or insult the CEC. He said that he had been in politics since 21 years, and his criticism was always meant for the betterment of institutions.

Imran Khan said that PTI’s 126-day sit-in was also staged to ensure the transparent elections. He hoped that the ECP would conduct the free and fair elections in the Country.

It is pertinent to mention here that Imran Khan was accused of labelling the ECP as prejudice in Party Funding Case, and estranged PTI leader Akbar S. Babar had filed a petition in the Election Commission against Imran Khan in this regard.
