ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The Secretary Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) Babar Yaqoob Fateh Muhammad on Friday said the Commission was not in a position yet to announce the date of next general elections; though, he added preparations for polls were in full swing.

“We can’t announce election date right now,” the Secretary Election Commission said while holding a media briefing in Islamabad.

His media briefing followed a session of the ECP presided over the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Justice (retd) Sardar Muhammad Raza in which preparation for the upcoming general elections was reviewed.

The Chief Secretaries, Secretary Statistics Rukhsana Yasmeen, Provincial Election Commissioners and Chairman National Database & Registration Authority (NADRA) Usman Yusuf Mobeen participated in the session.

The ECP meeting had to take important decisions regarding the delimitation of constituencies and reviewing of the electoral list.

It is pertinent to mention here that the Parliament will complete its five-year tenure on June 4, 2018 and according to Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, the next general elections will be conducted on time.

While briefing the media, the Secretary ECP said that we have convened maps from the provincial governments and statistics department by January 10.

The Secretary ECP said that work regarding delimitations of constituencies will start from January 15, 2018 and the process will be completed till May 3.

Babar Yaqoob said that with the sign of President Mamnoon Hussain, the bill will turn into an act and the interim results of census will be given. He said that according to the Secretary Statistics, the president has not yet signed the constitutional amendment.
