ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has officially listed the Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif as the President of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), replacing his predecessor Nawaz Sharif following the latter’s ouster as per directive of the Supreme Court of Pakistan.

The EPC had removed the name of Nawaz Sharif on February 21 as the President PML-N from the list of its enlisted political parties after the Supreme Court in its ruling related to Election Act 2017 Case declared him ineligible to head a political party in the light of Panama verdict announced on July 28, 2017.

The Supreme Court’s ruling against Nawaz Sharif prompted the ruling PML-N to elect its new President within seven days.

Eventually the PML-N’s Central Working Committee (CWC) held its meeting in Lahore on February 27 under the Chairmanship of its Chairman Raja Zafar-Ul-Haq in which it elected Shahbaz Sharif un-opposed as the party head.

The PML-N CWC’s decision was later endorsed by the Party’s Central General Council meeting held on March 13 at Jinnah Convention Centre in Islamabad.
