ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Thursday disqualified the former Federal Minister for Privatization and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Daniyal Aziz for five years in a Contempt of Court Case.

Following the ruling from the Supreme Court, Daniyal Aziz couldn’t remain eligible any longer to contest the general elections 2018.

A three-member bench of the Supreme Court headed by Justice Azmat Saeed Sheikh announced the verdict which had been reserved on May 3.

Justice Mushir Alam read the verdict which declared Daniyal Aziz convicted under article 204 of the Constitution. His conviction remained in effect till the rising of the Court.

In its ruling, the Court said that Daniyal Aziz committed contempt of Court and judges, and he interfered in the provision of justice. The Court ruled that according to the law, a convicted person can’t contest the election.

It is worth mentioning here that the former Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani also suffered the same conviction from the Supreme Court in April 2012 in a Contempt of Court Case.

Talking to media outside the Supreme Court after the verdict, Daniyal Aziz said that i didn’t say those contempt words upon which i have been convicted today.

Daniyal Aziz said that I have followed all directions of the Court unlike Yousaf Raza Gilani.

The PML-N leader said that now his wife Mehnaz Akbar Aziz will contest the upcoming elections from his Constituency NA-77 Narowal-I.
