Islamabad, Pakistan: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif will inaugurate Lowari Tunnel soon as construction work has 90% completed.

The project of construction of Lowari Tunnel began on September 8, 1975 and inaugurated by the then Prime Minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, but was stopped by Martial law rule of Gen Ziaul Haq. Work on the tunnel restarted under the direction of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

“A project of $13200 million is about to finish by contractor Sambu JV (South Korea). PM Nawaz took keen interest in the completion of the tunnel and provided twenty five billion rupees for the project”, commented an official of National Highways Authorities.

This project links Chitral Valley with rest of the country with an all weather road and will reduce journey time between Peshawar and Chitral from existing 14 hours to seven hours and will surely boost domestic tourism in Chitral.

Dir-Chitral Road becomes inaccessible during winter and Chitral Valley has no road access during snow season.
