PESHAWAR, Pakistan: The Peshawar High Court (PHC) on Thursday dismissed the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)-backed Sunni Ittehad Council’s (SIC) petition challenging the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) decision to reject the party allocation of reserved women and minority seats.

The verdict was announced by a five-member bench led by Justice Ishtiaq Ibrahim and comprising Justice Ijaz Anwar, Justice S.M. Attique Shah, Justice Shakeel Ahmed and Justice Syed Arshad Ali.

“All petitions are unanimously dismissed,” the Court ruled upholding the ECP’s decision of depriving the SIC of reserved seats.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Attorney General for Pakistan Mansoor Usman Awan argued before the Court that a political party could get reserved seats only if it won a general one.

The ECP lawyer Sikander Basheer Momand had supported his arguments, saying that the SIC was a political party but not a parliamentary one.
