KARACHI: The Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) will observe Tajdeed e Ehad (Rejuvenation of Promise) week from January 16 to 24, 2014 to pay tribute to late Minhaj Burna an icon of freedom of press and role model for Journalists in Pakistan on his death anniversary.

   

Minhaj Burna, the Ex-President PFUJ and Ex-Chairman APNEC, is remembered for his heroic struggle to help journalist community to win better terms of employment and freedom of expression in the newspaper industry. His uncompromising struggle against the military regime is regarded as the most daring resistance offered to a military dictator in the history of Pakistan.

The decision to organize countrywide events to mark the death anniversary of Minhaj Burna in connection to raise voice against target killing of journalists was taken in a PFUJ special meeting in Karachi.

The President PFUJ Afzal Butt chaired an important meeting of PFUJ leaders and office bearers which decided to observe a week to commemorate the services of Minhaj Burna for journalists’ community and raise the voice for slain journalists Shan Dahar and Wali Khan Babar cases for justice.

All the affiliated Unions have been advised to schedule special meetings, seminars and protest rallies during the week at respective stations to highlight the role of Minhaj Burna and PFUJ for freedom of Press in Pakistan and draw the attention of Federal government, provincial governments, parliamentarians, political parties, civil society, lawyers, judiciary and other segments of society towards the cases of target killing of journalists during last decade specially the murder of Shan Dahar in Larkana on January 1, 2014 and Wali Khan Babar in Karachi in 2011 anxiously waiting for the actions against the culprits.

The PFUJ meeting was attended by Secretary General PFUJ Khurshid Abbasi, Vice President PFUJ Khurshid Tanveer , Members FEC, President Karachi Press Club Imtiaz Khan Faran, Fahim Siddique, Sardar Liquate, Lala Asad Pathan, Shiekh Asif, Ex Secretary General PFUJ Mazar Abbas, Chairman APNEC Shafi ud Ashraf, President The Jang Union Jameel Ahmed, Vice Chairman APNEC Karachi Rana Yousaf, General Secretary Media Workers Organizations-MWO Obiadullah, Joint Secretary MWO Karachi Erfan Ali, President The News Workers Union Shakeel Khan, Secretary Dara Zafar, Mansoor Yousaf and Senior member Karachi Union of Journalists (KUJ) Naseer Ahmed.
