Monitoring Desk: The year 2024 has proven to be the deadliest year in Pakistan in terms of security forces and civilian casualties in the past decade.
According to the Annual Security Report for 2024 released by the Islamabad-based think tank Center for Research and Security Studies (CRSS), a total of 444 terrorist attacks against security forces killed 685 personnel.
According to the report, 2024 has proven to be the deadliest year in a decade for Pakistan’s civil and military security forces. Equally alarming were the cumulative losses of civilians and security personnel, i.e. 1612 fatalities, accounting for over 63% of the total recorded this year and marking 73% more losses compared to 934 outlaws eliminated.
The overall fatalities recorded this year was a record 9-year high, and over 66% more than in 2023. On average, nearly seven lives were lost daily, with November emerging as the deadliest month across all metrics, compared to all other months of the year.
The Annual Security Report 2024 has described a total of 1,612 deaths of security personnel and civilians as worrisome. While 934 terrorists were killed in security forces operations during this period.
The report said that the total number of deaths recorded this year is the highest in the last 9 years. There were more than 66 percent more deaths in 2024 compared to 2023 and an average of about seven lives were lost daily.
According to the CRSS report, November 2024 proved to be the deadliest month compared to all other months.
The report said that the highest number of incidents of violence in 2024 occurred in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where 1616 deaths were recorded, and in Balochistan, 782.
According to the think tank report, in 2024, a total of 2546 civilians, security personnel, and those involved in illegal activities were killed during 1166 terrorist attacks and counter-terrorism operations, while a total of 2267 people were injured.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police, in a report issued for 2024, claimed that 270 terrorists were killed and 802 terrorists were arrested in encounters with police and security agencies last year, including 32 dangerous and wanted terrorists.
According to the police, 13 of these dangerous and wanted terrorists were arrested dead and 19 were arrested alive.
Of the 23 armed groups present in Afghanistan, 17 are fighting against Pakistan, with reports of the reactivation of organizations like Al-Qaeda and ISIS.
