Senate passes National Counter Terrorism Authority bill

HeadlinesSenate passes National Counter Terrorism Authority bill

ISLAMABAD: The Senate on Wednesday passed the National Counter Terrorism Authority Bill, the bill provides for the establishment of National Counter Terrorism Authority in Pakistan.

Law Minister Farooq H. Naik tabled the bill and said that Prime Minister will be the chairman of the Authority.

Meanwhile, Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) leader Raza Rabbani opposed the bill, saying according to the bill the counter authority was not an independent institution, as it would work under the bureaucracy.

Rabbani said that the army would command a superior position, as the prime minister would not be able to do anything if head of any agency didn’t attend its meetings.

The PPP leader also objected over the inclusion of a federal secretary in the authority’s boards of governors and questioned his expertise in counter terrorism.

However, the Senate approved the bill with majority. The bill had already been passed by the National Assembly.
