ISLAMABAD: The Foreign Office said on Tuesday that Pakistan’s nuclear deterrence capability is aimed at maintaining regional stability in South Asia, adding that it is also fully engaged with the international community on nuclear safety and security issues.

The statement came in response to a report published in the Washington Post regarding US intelligence surveillance activities with focus on Pakistan’s nuclear programme.

“Pakistan is also fully engaged with the international community on nuclear safety and security issues,” Foreign Office Spokesman Aizaz Ahmed Chaudhry said on Tuesday.

The spokesman said that the efficacy of its strategic export controls has been acknowledged by experts from the international export control regimes during interactions on various occasions.

“Pakistan is a party to both Chemical Weapons Convention and Biological Weapons Convention and is fully implementing the two regimes,” he said.

Chaudhry said “Pakistan is fully committed to objectives of disarmament and non-proliferation. As a nuclear weapons state‚ Pakistan’s policy is characterized by restraint and responsibility.”

The spokesman further said “Pakistan follows the best international practices and standards set by the International Atomic Energy Agency.”
