Pakistan, China to sign investment agreements worth $20 billion for energy sector

MURREE, Pakistan: Pakistan and China will sign investment agreements worth $20 billion for energy sector only during the upcoming visit of President Xi Jinping, the Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif said.

The Chinese President Xi Jinping will undertake a two-day state visit to Pakistan from Monday at the invitation of his Pakistani counterpart Mamnoon Hussain and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

Talking to high-level officials of major Chinese investor companies in Murree on Saturday, the Punjab chief minister said the Xi Jinping’s upcoming visit is of vital importance for Pakistan, and it would mark the beginning of a new era of development and economic cooperation between the two countries.

During the meeting, the two sides discussed various issues including the investment in energy, transport, infrastructure and other sectors in Pakistan, especially in Punjab.

The Punjab chief minister said that the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government will end the darkness of load-shedding with the cooperation of China.

Shahbaz Sharif said that the two coal-run power plants at Sahiwal with capacity of 1,320 megawatts will start power generation by 2017 and prove to be a milestone for end of energy crisis in the country.

On the occasion, the Chinese delegation assured the chief minister full cooperation in energy, transport, mining and infrastructure sectors.
