RIYADH, Saudi Arabia: A high level Pakistani delegation headed by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif met the Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud in Riyadh on Monday and discussed important regional issues with a focus on Saudi-Iran tension.
The prime minister was accompanied by the Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General Raheel Sharif, Special Assistant on Foreign Affairs Tariq Fatemi and National Security Advisor Nasir Janjua.
On the other hand, the members of the Saudi cabinet facilitated King Salman in the meeting.
Earlier, the prime minister reached Riyadh to meet the Saudi King to defuse tensions between the brotherly countries of Iran and Saudi Arabia.
The Governor of Riyadh Region Prince Faisal bin Bandar bin Abdulaziz received the prime minister and members of his entourage at the King Salman airport.
“Pakistan is deeply concerned at the recent escalation of tensions between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Islamic Republic of Iran. The Prime Minister has called for resolution of differences through peaceful means, in the larger interest of Muslim unity, particularly during these challenging times,” a press release of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday said.
“Pakistan has consistently advocated the policy of promoting brotherhood among member states of Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC),” it said.
The prime minister will also visit Tehran tomorrow (Tuesday) and have a meeting with the Iranian President Hassan Rouhani.
While playing a mediatory role, Sharif is making efforts to help defuse tension between the two countries urging them to resolve differences peacefully.
