PakistanContempt case: SC rejects Chairman NAB’s exemption request

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan (SC) on Wednesday rejected the petition filed by lawyer of Chairman National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Admiral (retd) Fasih Bokhari seeking exemption for his client from appearing in contempt of court hearing, Dispatch News Desk (DND) reported.

In a letter written to President Asif Ali Zardari on January 27, Chairman NAB had accused the apex court of interfering in NAB investigations, particularly against politicians, and endangering the independence of their work. The apex court, therefore, issued a show cause notice for contempt of court to the NAB chairman on Jan 31.

During today’s hearing, a three-member bench of the apex court, led by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, declined to grant exemption to the Chairman NAB from appearing in the court as sought by his counsel in a petition.

NAB’s counsel said that the registrar had been informed that the government formed a two-member commission headed by Justice (retd) Nawaz Abbasi. In response, Naveed Yousaf Mirza replied that he did not know about such a commission.

Moreover, the apex court also issued notices to two Urdu newspapers.

Due to the alterations in the bench hearing the case, the next hearing was adjourned until March 14.
