Senate of PakistanPakistan to raise US drone strike issue at int'l human rights council:...

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The Advisor on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz on Thursday said that Pakistan would strongly raise the issue of US drone attacks at the international human rights council later this month.

“We have prepared a detailed briefing for presentation to the Human rights council on the issue,” Aziz said while winding up debate on an adjournment motion in Senate moved by Farhatullah Babar about the US drone attack in Balochistan that killed Taliban leader Mullah Akhtar Mansour.

The advisor said that the present government had seriously taken up the issue of drone attacks with the United States. He said that Pakistan had also apprised different countries including China, Russia, Saudi Arabia and Central Asian States about the fallout of the recent drone attack.

Sartaj Aziz said that the recent drone strike had added to the complexity and undermined the Afghan peace process as well as Pakistan-US relations. He also said that the drone attacks were serious violation of Pakistan’s sovereignty and against the international, political and humanitarian laws.

The advisor said that the attack was very unfortunate and a serious issue but Pakistan would continue its efforts and in touch with the Afghan government, adding that the only solution to the Afghan problem was dialogue between the Afghan government and Taliban.

The advisor said that the Quadrilateral Coordination Group (QCG) on Afghan peace and reconciliation process on May 18 reiterated that peace negotiations were the only option for a political settlement in Afghanistan.

In addition, he also rejected a report that meeting of Afghan Shura was held on Pakistan soil and added that it took place in Qandahar.

Sartaj Aziz said that Pakistan was in touch with Iran and added there was no misunderstanding between the two countries in this regard.

Earlier, the Senators strongly condemned the drone attack in Balochistan, saying this amount to violation of Pakistan’s sovereignty.
