Pakistan not to carry out executions during Ramazan

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: As the holy month of Ramazan has begun in Pakistan, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has directed to temporarily suspend the executions across the country to observe the sanctity of the holy month.

Since December 2014, the authorities in the South Asian country have hanged nearly 150 persons who were found guilty of committing murders or terror attacks in various jails across the country.

The international organizations have repeatedly voiced their concerns over the resumption of executions in Pakistan and urged Islamabad to bring it to an end because it is tantamount to violation of its international obligations.

However, Pakistan insists that executions are being conducted according to its laws and they will be continued.

Meanwhile, the sighting of Ramazan moon on Thursday night in Pakistan has marked the beginning of the ninth month of Islamic calendar.

In a message on the occasion, the prime minister has appealed to the nation to pray for security, peace, progress and prosperity of the country during Ramazan-ul-Mubarak.

The prime minister also asked people not to forget their country during the sacred month and remember it in their prayers.
