RAWALPINDI, Pakistan: The German Defence Minister Ursula Von der Leyen called on the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Raheel Sharif on Wednesday at the Army’s General headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi, the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) said.

In a press release issued here, the ISPR said that during meeting a wide range of issues including defence cooperation, regional security and emerging geo-strategic environment were discussed.

The German defence minister appreciated the phenomenal successes of anti-terror military operation Zarb-e-Azb and paid rich tributes to the martyrs of Pakistani security forces.

Earlier on arrival at GHQ, the German Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen laid floral wreath at Yadgar-e-Shuhada. A smartly turned out contingent of Pakistan Army presented the Guard of Honour to the visiting dignitary.

On Tuesday, Ursula van der Leyen along with her delegation held a meeting with the Federal Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif in Islamabad and exchanged views on Afghanistan and overall situation in the region, Daish, situation in Middle East, and the issue of Syrian refugees.

The German defence minister praised Pakistan’s role in peace initiatives in the region, particularly on Eastern and Western Borders. She also appreciated the positive trajectory of Pak-German Relations and emphasized further enhancement of ties especially in the field of defence.
