ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The Foreign Office said on Friday that Pakistan is not in favor of arms race in South Asia as the region needs peace.

In her weekly media briefing in Islamabad on Friday, the Foreign Office spokesperson Tasneem Aslam urged the Indian side to sit on dialogue table and discuss bilateral disputes including Kashmir with Pakistan.

The spokesperson said that 12 Pakistani citizens were martyred while another 52 injured due to unprovoked Indian firing on Line of Control (LoC).

Tasneem Aslam said that the international community also expressed its reservations on escalation on the LoC and Working Boundary.

The Foreign Office spokesperson said that Pakistan initiated action against terrorism in its own interest and has ensured that its soil is not used against any other country. She added that an equal response in this regard will make our efforts more effective.

CASA-1000 project

The spokesperson welcomed recent development regarding CASA-1000 project, and said that the agreement between Pakistan and Afghanistan will further our resolve to promote regional connectivity.

Tasneem Aslam said that besides meeting our energy needs, this project is also important for Afghanistan’s economic development.

Pakistan and Afghanistan signed an agreement on October 11 on the electricity transit fee for the long awaited 1000-megawatt Central Asia-South Asia (CASA-1000) transmission line project.

Under the agreement, 1,300 megawatts (MW) of electricity will be transmitted from Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan through Afghanistan (which would consume 300 MW) to Pakistan.

The Afghan government will charge Pakistan 1.25 cents per kilo watt (KW) as a transit fee for the transmission line running through its territory.
