PakistanPakistan actively engaged with int'l community on nuclear issues: analysts

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Analysts have said that as a responsible nuclear state, Pakistan remains actively engaged with international community, including the United States, on nuclear stability and security issues.

Analyst Dr Zafar Nawaz Jaspal, speaking in a Radio Pakistan programme, said that Pakistan’s nuclear policy is very clear. It is shaped by evolving security dynamics of South Asia, growing conventional asymmetry, provocative doctrines and aggressive posturing by India, which obliges it to take all necessary measures to maintain a full spectrum deterrence capability to safeguard our national security, he said.

The United States, he said, wanted to restrict Pakistan to proceed further in nuclear weapons programme but itself was focusing on to advance its nuclear technology.

“Pakistan wants a nuclear deal with the US not on the terms and conditions imposed by the latter.” Analyst Dr Farhat Haq said that it will be cleared after a thorough research that why does the US want to impose limitations on Pakistan’s nuclear weapons and delivery systems.

He said that the present government should take certain measures to realize the world that Pakistan is a responsible nuclear power. Both India and Pakistan need to resolve all outstanding issues through dialogue and the United States could also play a vital role in this regard. The United States, Pakistan and India should jointly devise certain policies to restrict nuclear programmes, said Dr Farhat.

Nuclear expert Dr. Nouman Sattar said the decision to impose limitations on Pakistan’s nuclear programme is a political one. The world knows that Pakistan’s nuclear programme is safe and is just for its defence and to maintain balance of power in the region and it has best quality nuclear weapons.

Nuclear scientist Dr. Samar Mubarakmand said Pakistan would not restrict its nuclear programme to weapons and delivery systems that are appropriate to its actual defence needs against India’s nuclear threat. India has been jealous of Pakistan’s developments in nuclear programme as the latter has successfully test-launched an upgraded Shaheen Missile with an optimal range of 600 km. India has threatened Pakistan many a times for cold start war, he said adding Pakistan is ready for any sort of war.

Former ambassador Arif Kamal said that Pakistan has been following the policies devised for safe and secure nuclear programmes. Pakistan is the only Muslim country having nuclear power in the world, he said.
