No decision on Yemen to be taken against national interest: Asif

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The Federal Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif has said that no decision on Yemen crises would be taken against the national interest.

His statement comes when a joint session of the Parliament continues for the third consecutive day in Islamabad to discuss Yemen conflict and develop consensus strategy on the issue.

Talking to a news channel, the minister said that Pakistan will play its due role in the Yemen conflict.

The defence minister said that there is no threat to Haramain Sharifain and territorial integrity of Saudi Arabia. However, he added, in case of any threat Pakistan would defend the integrity of Saudi Arabia as two countries enjoy brotherly relations.

The minister further said that some 1000 Pakistani troops are present in different parts of Saudi Arabia for training but no personnel was deputed at the Yemen border.

On Tuesday, addressing the joint session of the Parliament, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said that the government was not in a hurry to decide whether to join the Saudi-led coalition against Shia Houthi rebels in Yemen.

The prime minister assured the House that the government would formulate its policy on the Middle East crisis keeping in view sentiments of the elected representatives.
