No confrontation between government and judiciary: Nisar

Government of PakistanNo confrontation between government and judiciary: Nisar

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan on Saturday dismissed reports about the alleged confrontation between the federal government and the top judiciary.

His remarks came in reference to an objection voiced by the government in response to a Supreme Court Judge’s remarks, labeling it as a ‘Sicilian mafia’.

In a statement in Islamabad on Saturday, the minister said that certain elements want to give the impression that confrontation and chaos exist between state institutions for their vested political interests. He said that these so called defenders of judiciary were themselves involved in ridiculing the institutions when they were in power.

The interior minister said that the federal government’s response to the remarks of an honorable judge should not be linked with confrontation.

Last Thursday while hearing a Case related to Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s (PML-N) former Senator Nehal Hashmi’s threatening and derogatory remarks against the Supreme Court and Joint Investigation Team (JIT), Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed observed that the government had become the Sicilian Mafia as it was threatening the judges and investigators in Panama Case.

In response, the government in a statement expressed ‘deep sorrow and regret’ over remarks by the Supreme Court judge, and termed it “against judicial traditions and code of ethics of the apex court”.
