News12 patients died after lawyers attacked Punjab Institute of Cardiology

LAHORE, Pakistan: The brawl between doctors and lawyers intensified as a large number of lawyers stormed the Punjab Institute of Cardiology (PIC) in Lahore on Wednesday and vandalized the property in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and the Operation Theatre.

The President Young Doctors Association (YDA) Dr Irfan alleged that 12 patients have died and 25 doctors have suffered injuries after lawyers stormed the PIC. However, the number of casualties is yet to be ascertained from independent sources.

The protesting lawyers also attacked the media personnel & doctors, and damaged vehicles parked at the PIC.

They also mishandled the Punjab Information Minister Fayyaz ul Hassan Chohan, who earlier reached at the hospital to pacify the infuriated lawyers and talking to media later on, said that lawyers tried to abduct him, and their vandalism is highly condemnable. He said that a strict action would be taken against those who took the law in their hands.

Prime Minister Imran Khan while talking notice of lawyers’ attack at PIC summoned a report from the Chief Secretary Punjab and Inspector General of Punjab Police.

The Punjab Chief Minister Sardar Usman Buzdar also took the notice of the incident and ordered an inquiry into it.

Usman Buzdar said that interrupting the treatment of patients is a despicable and criminal act. He said that the Punjab government will take strict legal action against those responsible.

The police used tear gas and aerial firing to disperse the protesting lawyers outside the Punjab Institute of Cardiology, wherein a contingent of Rangers also reached to control the situation.

Separately, the lawyers also staged a sit-in at GPO Chowk on Mall Road in Lahore, and blocked the traffic.
