ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Vice-President Senator Sherry Rehman has been appointed as the Opposition Leader in the Senate, becoming the first female Opposition Leader in the Upper House of the Parliament.
The Senate Secretariat issued a notification on Thursday in this regard, mentioning “In Pursuance of Rule 16 (3) of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the Senate, 2012, the Chairman Senate has been pleased to declare Senator Sherry Rehman as Leader of the Opposition in the Senate, with effect from 22nd March, 2018.”
Sherry Rehman is the 12th Opposition Leader in the Senate and seventh Opposition Leader of PPP. She enjoys support of 34 Senators including of 20 lawmakers belonging to her own party – PPP.
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) had also nominated Azam Swati for the Slot of the Opposition Leader in the Senate against Sherry Rehman and won the support of Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) and Jamaat-e-Islami (JI); however, he secured only 19 votes.
