NewsPFUJ regrets Supreme Court treatment meted out to Hussain Naqi, expresses solidarity

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) has regretted the treatment meted out to Hussain Naqi, one of the most senior and seasoned journalist of Pakistan.

“The treatment meted out to a person who fought every dictator in this Country, who fought all his life for freedom of speech and expression and who spent his life defending the rights of down trodden people of Pakistan is highly regrettable,” a joint statement issued by the PFUJ President Afzal Butt and the Secretary General Ayub Jan Sarhandi said in a joint statement issued on Monday.

The PFUJ, which is an umbrella organisation of all the journalists’ unions across Pakistan, said the humiliation of a senior citizen — that too of an upright and principled person — by the Supreme Court has seriously hurt the sentiments of journalists’ community across the Country.

Such a treatment is also in violation of Article 5 of Universal Declaration of Human Rights, to which Pakistan iEnds, signatory, which says: “No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.”

“Hussain Naqi has taught journalism to hundreds of journalists in this country and is highly revered by the journalists’ fraternity, the statement said adding “We express our complete solidarity with one of our hero’s and unitedly stand with him.
