ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The Journalist Community under the auspices of Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) has braced itself for the ‘Tehreek-e-Haqooq Media Workers’, a protest movement aimed at preservation of journalist rights.

Under the ‘Tehreek-e-Haqooq Media Workers’ (Media Workers Rights Movement), a protest camp will be staged on Monday (April 9) in front of the Parliament House in Islamabad.

The President PFUJ Afzal Butt said that the protest camp will continue till the acceptance of their five-point demands which include formation of 8th Wage Board Award, legislation for electronic media employees, abolition of contract system in media industry, annulment of honorary representation of newspapers/TV Channels, and closure of bureau sale.

The ‘Tehreek-e-Haqooq Media Workers’ is being fully backed by all Unions of Journalists across the Country, various newspapers, and journalists affiliated with various media outlets.

Talking to the Dispatch News Desk (DND) news agency, the National Press Club (NPC) Islamabad President Tariq Mehmood Chaudhry said that April 9 will have a great significance in Country’s history in terms of jounalist rights, saying that they will not withdraw from their demands until welfare of journalists are granted due consideration and practical steps are taken in this regard.

Meanwhile, Officer Bearers of PFUJ, NPC and Rawalpindi Islamabad Union of Journalists (RIUJ) also succeeded to win the support of political and parliamentary leaders which included Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Quaid Nawaz Sharif, Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) senior leader and the Chairman Senate Sherry Rehman, Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP) Chief Mehmood Khan Achakzai and Awami Muslim League (AML) Chief Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed.

Separately, a protest will also be organized by Pakistan Press Club UK (PPC UK) outside the Pakistan High Commission in London as part of the ‘Tehreek-e-Haqooq Media Workers’ to express solidity with PFUJ, NPC Islamabad and RIUJ.
