ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: A meeting here at the Prime Minister House Thursday agreed to acquire quality weather radars and share comprehensive weather reports with the provincial authorities and the people to mitigate any losses.

The decision came at a meeting chaired by Secretary to the Prime Minister to review the performance of Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), on the directions of Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif.

The Meteorological Department gave a presentation regarding its existing capacity of timely forecasting of Monsoon and changes in weather.

The meeting was also briefed about the efficacy of existing radar system working round the clock. It was informed that some radars were getting obsolete and it was difficult to get them repaired because of the redundant technology.

It was decided to purchase best quality radar from the international market and the Meteorological Department was asked to submit a comprehensive project document along with financial costing for the approval of the competent authority.

It was also agreed that the PMD will regularly share weather forecast with all the stakeholders and disseminate the same through media, to mitigate the risk.

The meeting discussed the existing mechanism of the Meteorological Department viz-a-viz Monsoon forecasting and related matters.

It was also agreed that Pakistan Meteorological Department, Federal Flood Commission and National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) will effectively communicate among each other in real time for better coordination.

The participants of the meeting were told that the Government was fully committed to provide all adequate resources to strengthen the Meteorological Department through provision of equipment, quality human resource and operational independence.

Chairman NDMA briefed the meeting that NDMA is ready with all its stock for any untoward eventuality during floods.

The Chairman also apprised the meeting that he is in contact with all the provincial disaster management authorities and fully aware of all their existing stocks for flood relief.

The meeting was attended by Secretary Climate Change, Secretary Aviation, Chairman NDMA, Director General Pakistan Meteorological Department, Chairman Federal Flood Commission and senior government officials.
