Pakistan army continues unabated efforts for flood hit areas

RAWALPINDI: The Pakistan army continues its unabated efforts for flood hit areas across the country as dozens of people have died and several thousand people have been rendered homeless in Punjab and Azad Kashmir due to rain and flood.

The army troops, in line with their traditions, are working at full pace and capacity to extend maximum help to their brethren in distress.

The Inter Service Public Relations (ISPR) said that the Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General Raheel Sharif also visited the flood affected areas of Punjab in Gujranwala and Mandi Bahaduin districts on Tuesday and was briefed by the local military commanders about the on-going rescue and relief efforts by the army.

Since start of the relief operation till Monday, the army troops had rescued more than 17,000 stranded people to safer places. Besides ground troops, 325 boats and five helicopters had been employed for rescue and relief activities.

On Monday, the Pakistan army relief and rescue operation continued for flood hit areas of Jhelum, kot momin, Pindi Bhattian, Hafizabad, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Chinot, jhang, Mandi bahaudin and surroundings. The army troops were also moved to Multan, Dera Ghazi Khan, Liyyah, Sahiwal, Trimoo Headworks to meet in crisis situation.

The army troops recovered 33 persons along with their livestock who had been trapped in deosai plateau at 16,000 feet height because of heavy snow fall in Gilgit.

The army relief camp was established at chilum near Astore for provision of necessary relief items and medical care.

On the same day, five helicopters employed on flood relief duties flew 30 sorties for rescue of trapped people. Likewise, 1,500 people were rescued by helicopters and boats from flood hit areas of Jalalpur Bhattian, Pindi Bhattian, Hafizabad, wazirabad, wani k tarar, Rasoolnagar, Chiniot, kot momin and Mandi bahauddin.

The ISPR said that 10,000 food packs were dropped by army helicopters for people trapped in flood water at various places.

In Gujranwala division, Pakistan army established 54 relief camps and 73 mobile medical camps where flood affectees were being provided food items, shelters and medical aid.

Earlier on Sunday, 16 helicopters sorties were flown for rescue of trapped people. According to the ISPR, 2,300 people were rescued by helicopters and boats from flood hit areas of Chiniot, Kot momin Phalia, Hafizabaz, Khanki, Qadirabad, Bajwat, Chaprar, Qadirabad, Khanki, Wazirabad and Mandi bahuddin areas.

Likewise, food packs were dropped by the army helicopters for people trapped in flood water at various places in Chiniot, Sialkot, Gujranwala and Mandibahauddin on the same day.
