NAB has recovered Rs262 billion since 2000: Chairman

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has recovered and deposited Rs262 billion corruption money in the national exchequer since its inception in 2000, the bureau Chairman Qamar Zaman Chaudhary said on Monday.

In his address at a seminar on ‘Right to Information and Whistle Blower Protection’ organized by NAB in collaboration with Transparency International in Islamabad, the NAB Chairman said that the organization has recovered Rs7 billion in corruption cases relating to Rental Power Projects and out of 12 cases, six references have been sent to courts.

The Chairman said that the country’s top anti-graft watchdog has also recovered Rs1 billion from Rs2 billion weapons scam in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He said that the Inspector General (IG) of Police at that time is still in jail.

Qamar Zaman said that 152 references were filed in courts during last year. He said that 10-month timeline has been fixed from receiving the complaints till filing the case in the NAB courts. He said that previously, the process was open-ended.

The NAB Chairman further said that it was decided that all the complaints received till 2013 will be disposed of till June 30.

The NAB an autonomous and constitutionally established federal institution responsible to build efforts against corruption and prepare critical national economic intelligence assessments against economic terrorism to the government of Pakistan.

It operates under the National Accountability Ordinance-1999 while having its headquarter at Islamabad, it has four regional offices in the provincial capitals and one at Rawalpindi.
