Muslim man badly beaten for allegedly slaughtering cow in northern India

LUCKNOW, India: A Muslim man was badly beaten up by members of a militant Hindi organization for allegedly slaughtering a cow in Indian northern state of Uttar Pradesh.

The incident took place in Shamli district of Utter Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar City where extremists belonging to the Bajrang Dal abused and beaten up a man identified as Riaz, alleging that he was attempting to slaughter a cow.

However, Riaz denied the accusations and said that he was just present at the site where the cow was allegedly being slaughtered.

More interestingly, police also detained Riaz instead of taking any actions against the Bajrang Dal extremists.

The cow is considered as a sacred animal in Hinduism, the largest religion in India which is the world’s second largest beef exporter and fifth biggest beef consumer.

Several Indian states including Utter Pradesh have various regulations prohibiting either the slaughter or sale of cows.

In March this year, the incumbent Indian Hindu nationalist government led by Narendra Modi hinted that it was considering a national ban on cow slaughter.
