NewsMet office warns of unusual rains this monsoon

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Pakistan Meteorological Department has predicted unusual rains this summer and warned of low magnitude flood in some areas of the country.

Director General Met Office Dr Ghulam Rasool told a private news channel that north-eastern areas of the country including Rawalpindi, Lahore and Gujranwala would receive 40 percent more rain than the normal in upcoming monsoon season.

Similarly, Karachi Hyderabad and Thar would also receive more rain than the normal with Karachi having 100 to 120 mm rain that may result in brief urban flood if the water courses and sewerage are not timely cleaned.

Dr. Ghulam Rasool said the change in weather phenomenon El-nino would disturb the normal rains schedule in Karachi as the city had been in the grip of el-nino during last two years.

Answering a question, he said, the prediction of the Met office is authentic and at par with the predictions of the internationally institution recognized in accuracy.

“Upcoming two months are important in terms of planning as how much we are prepared to cope with such a situation,” he added.

He said due to local and international climate change, Pakistan will receive overall 20 percent more rain that does not mean that it will happen across the country. Rather, in some areas it will be 40 percent and in some areas there will be no rain.

Under this weather pattern, he said, North-eastern areas and Karachi and Hyderabad will receive more rains.
