Software Freedom Law Centre report: India puts 9,000 telephone subscribers under surveillance every month Istanbul, Turkey: An investigative study prepared by New Delhi-based NGO Software Freedom Law Centre, India reveals that Indian government puts around 9,000 telephone subscribers under surveillance net every month.

The figure of 9,000 subscribers being clamped under surveillance has come from the Union home ministry.  Mishi Choudhary, who is director of the organization Freedom Law Centre released study in Istanbul, Turkey, on Wednesday. The report has compiled information based on interviews and RTI applications to piece together the surveillance regime in India.

“On an average between 7,500 and 9,000 orders for interception of phones are issued by the central government per month,” Rakesh Mittal, director, internal security in the union home ministry stated in his reply to an Right of Information (RTI) application submitted by Freedom Law Centre. It may be mentioned that India law provides power to intelligence agencies to install tapping equipment at telephone/cell phone service providers systems.
