ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The Indian border forces committed 178 ceasefire violations at the Line of Control (LoC) and the Working boundary in 2016 due to which 19 Pakistani civilians embraced Shahadat and 80 were injured, according to the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR).

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the ISPR said that a group of United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan UNMOGIP visited the LoC near Kotli today and obtained first-hand information of Indian high handedness of targeting civil population near the Line of Control.

The ISPR said that during this year 11 civilians have embraced Shahadat due to unprovoked Indian firing and 29 were seriously injured. It said that 8 civilian embraced Shahadat at the Working Boundary near Sialkot and Shakargarh and 51 were seriously injured due to Indian unprovoked firing since January 2016.

Earlier in the day, the Director General South Asia and SAARC Dr Muhammad Faisal summoned the Indian Deputy High Commissioner J.P. Singh at the Foreign Office in Islamabad and strongly condemned the unprovoked ceasefire violations by the Indian Forces on the LoC in Nikial and Jandrot sectors on Monday which resulted in the martyrdom of six civilians and injuries to eight civilians.

The Director General urged the Indian side to respect the 2003 Ceasefire Understanding; investigate the continued incidents of ceasefire violations; instruct the Indian forces to respect the ceasefire, in letter and spirit, stop targeting the villages and civilians and maintain peace on the Working Boundary and the LoC.
