Facebook website was launched on February 4, 2004 Harvard College students and became a new phenomenon in the world.

Facebook is playing pivotal role in designing public opinion in Pakistan and all important political and religious parties are using facebook for spreading their promotional materials and launching debates.

Facebook has been in the centre of discussion about freedom of speech and hate speech in Pakistan because there are several cases in which Facebook was used to spread hate speech and material against Islam. Government of Pakistan took notice of spread of hate material against Islam and matter was taken with Facebook authorities.

Facebook was also instrumental in the horrific murder of a young student of Mardan Mashaal Khan when fake pages were made with Mashaal Khan’s identity and these pages were allegedly used against him by putting blasphemous material against Islam on his fake pages. These fake pages were promoted in his university to clamp him a blasphemous and then he was brutally murdered. Mashaal Khan had mentioned that fake Facebook pages had been launched with his fake identity and he used twitter to inform people but nobody listened him and his opponents— student of same university killed him by branding him a blasphemous.
