ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Since its inception, the Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) has so far forwarded over 6,500 recommendations after reviewing legal, social, economic and political aspects of various burning issues.

Official sources told the state-run news agency that the CII is a constitutional body that advises the legislature whether or not a certain law is repugnant to Islam, namely to the Quran and Sunnah.

The CII has conducted a total of 200 meetings since its inception. Over 90 reports have been prepared and sent to National Assembly and Provincial Assemblies for deliberations and law making, sources said adding that the council is mandated to bring laws in conformity with the injunctions of Islam but its recommendations are not binding.

Sources said that important laws have been enacted on the recommendations of the CII included the Offences against Property (Enforcement of Hudood) Ordinance, 1979; The Offence of Zina (Enforcement of Hudood) Ordinance, 1979; The Offence at Qazf (Enforcement at Hadd) Ordinance, 1979; The Prohibition (Enforcement) of Hadd) Order, 1979; The Qanun-e-Shahadat Order, 1984; The Zakat and Ushr, Ordinance, 1980; The Criminal Law (Amendment) Act, 1997 (Qanun-e-Qisas and Diyat); The Ehtram-e- Ramzan Ordinance, 1984; The Enforcement of Shariat Act, 1991 (adopted with certain modifications); Transplantation of Human organs.(Under consideration of  the Parliament) and Marriage with the Qur’an (Prohibition)(Under consideration of the Parliament).

Some of the departments established on the recommendations of the CII included Ministry at Religious Affairs and Minorities Affairs; Law Commission; Judicial service/Shariah Academy; Shariah Benches and Federal Shariat Court and Promotion of Arabic Language.
