LAHORE, Pakistan: A two-day Conference titled “China Pakistan Economic Corridor: Managing the Change” began at Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) in Lahore on Thursday.

The Conference is being organized by the CPEC and China-Pakistan Management Initiative (CPMI).

The first Session was held under the theme of “Challenges being faced by governments in implementing CPEC related projects” moderated by the Executive Director Pakistan-China Institute (PCI) Mustafa Hyder Sayed.

Panelists of the first Session included the Commissioner Inland Revenue Service Dr Erfa Iqbal, the Director Board of Investment (BoI) Zulfiqar Ali, the CEO Private Power & Infrastructure Board (PPIB) Jahanzeb Burana, the Managing Director PPIB Shahjahan Mirza, and Yasir Arafat of CPEC Centre of Excellence.

While speaking at the Conference, Dr Erfa Iqbal said that the projects under CPEC provide a platform to trigger business environment.

Dr Erfa Iqbal said that the real outcome of CPEC is how many joint ventures have been formed and how much investment in businesses has come.

Shahjahan Mirza said that there is no loan component in the energy projects under CPEC. He said that the projects follow the standard PP project financing model. He said that the government of Pakistan provides a sovereign guarantee for these projects, which is a standard guarantee.

The CPMI aims to stimulate research around issues related to business and management in China and Pakistan in the context of Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), and to promote business and academic relationships between the two countries.

The China Pakistan Management Initiative works with diverse organizations in China and Pakistan, including business organizations, academic institutions, government bodies and non-governmental organizations for achieving its objectives.
