ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The Center for Global & Strategic Studies (CGSS) organized an In-House discussion on “Escalation between the United States and Iran; Regional Implications and Options for Pakistan” in Islamabad on Wednesday.

Prominent dignitaries including defence analysts, former ambassadors and members of academia participated as panelists.

The participants discussed the US-Iran situation in detail and deliberated the possible policy options for Pakistan.

They stated that the US-Iran tussle is three dimensional that is global, regional and its effects on Pakistan. Iran’s main objective is withdrawal of the US forces troops from Iraq and other Middle-Eastern countries. The assassination of Qasim Solemani by US has triggered the situation and in response, Iran attacked the Ain al-Asad airbase of US in Iraq. However, Iran does not want any further escalation. US accused the involvement of Qasem Soleimani in conspiracy against US and killings of many innocent people.

The participants were of the view that reconciliation process is not evident which has created difficulties for Pakistan to take any stance but it is suggested that Pakistan should remain neutral and its territory must not be used for the interest of any other state. As far as, military escalation is concerned, US and Iran both will not go for full fledged war, however, the situation will remain tensed and confrontation is likely to continue.

The US and Iran tension will result in increase of oil prices and possibilities of proxy war in the Gulf region will further worsen the situation. While the US is trying to bring normalcy in its relations with Pakistan, the current situation will continue to test Pakistan’s various commitments with the US in context of US-Taliban peace talks. In addition, Pakistan will have to maintain a strategic balance between Saudi Arabia and Iran.

The US wants complete foothold in Middle-East and will continue using such proxy war tactics. Moreover, Arab world is divided and polarized. The developing scenario can also provoke the US to target more Iranian interests in the region.

The US is trying to give an impression that Iran is close ally of Russia which can be a threat for the US and Saudi Arabia as well. It is the need of the hour that global powers must use their influence to deescalate the situation. China has offered military assistance to Iraq and Russia is already involved in Syria and Iraq. The US is losing her global allies and is now isolated in the international arena. Amongst the Muslim countries in Middle-east, only Iran has the capable potential to fight against the US. Qasem Soleimani’s assassination is the violation of international law and violation of Iraq’s territorial sovereignty.

In case of full fledged war, Pakistan will have to decide its stance and has to come up with a policy. India can also benefit from such situation and can create further tensions at the eastern border of Pakistan. Pakistan must adopt a pragmatic foreign policy to tackle this situation and adopt a management strategy. The leadership of Pakistan must engage in mediation process through bilateral visits to Iran, the US and other major players. Pakistan must call Parliamentary Session to discuss National Security and create consensus. In the past, Pakistan has successfully maintained its neutral stance on various global issues including Iran-Iraq war and Yemen crisis. However, it is about time that Pakistan must frame a policy to come up with a comprehensive strategy.

Mushaal Malik seeks global community intervention to end Indian oppression in IIOJK ISLAMABAD: Mushaal Hussein Mullick, wife of an unlawfully incarcerated senior Hurriyat Leader Mohammad Yasin Malik, stated that the supremacist Indian occupation authorities had been committing war crimes and violating international human rights with impunity in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) since October 27, 1947 to perpetuate its illegitimate occupation on Kashmir. Speaking at a Kashmir solidarity rally taken out in Islamabad to mark Kashmir Black Day, she said that the people of Kashmir had been enduring the tyrannies of Hindutva regime during the past 77 years but these oppressions and coercive tactics could not dampen their courage. Mushaal, who is also the Chairperson of Peace and Culture Organisation, expressed serious concerns about safety and wellbeing of her jailed husband because the Indian notorious government was hell-bent to silence to most powerful voice of Kashmiri freedom struggle in a fake, fabricated and absurd case. She highlighted that the occupation authorities converted the scenic valley into a garrison city and a killing field, as even Kashmiri children could not go to school right now because parents were imprisoned for their crimes to raise voice of their right to self-determination. However, the Hurriyat leader stated that despite all these hardship and reign of terror unleashed by the brutal forces, Kashmiris remained steadfast struggling for seven decades to break the shackles of Indian slavery. Mushaal went on to say that when the people stand together, freedom can be achieved, with the people's voice, even the mightiest of tyrants can be defeated. The Hurriyat leader stated that people in the occupied valley were not even safe inside their own homes, as bodies of their leaders and loved ones were not returned to them. She highlighted the ordeal faced by Kashmiri leaders, saying Asiya Andrabi held in Tihar Jail, whose health deteriorated alarmingly in jail. She emphasized the importance of remembering this day annually, saying, “Every Pakistani stands in solidarity on this day.” Mushaal encouraged young Pakistanis to launch campaigns through social media, highlighting that Pakistan’s founding leader, Quaid-e-Azam, also placed trust in the power of youth. “You can become our powerful voice today,” she stated, urging them to remain steadfast for Kashmir. Mushaal recalled that India had resettled millions of Indian nationals in the region unlawfully to alter its demographic makeup, aiming to turn it into what she termed a mini-India. She called upon the international community to hold India accountable for its excesses in IIOJK and to support the Kashmiri people's struggle for their inalienable right to self-determination. Mushaal vowed that the people of Kashmir have endured decades of oppression, but their resolve remains unbroken. However, she urged the international community and human rights organizations to shun the double-standard and take note of Indian worst human rights violations so as to resolve the Kashmir dispute once for all in accordance to the aspirations of the people of Kashmir.
