LAHORE, Pakistan: Lahore may taste the joy of Basant (kite flying festival) next year after the Chief Minister Punjab Sardar Usman Buzdar has demonstrated keenness to restore the festival.

Basant has traditionally been a cultural festival across Punjab especially in Lahore to mark the advent of spring. However in recent years, it remained under a ban after a number of casualties surfaced mostly caused by kite strings.

In a statement on Tuesday, the Punjab Chief Minister Spokesman Dr Shahbaz Gill said that Usman Buzdar has voiced his desire to restore the Basant festival in Lahore.

Dr Shahbaz Gill said that in compliance with desires of various social circles, the Chief Minister has decided to form an 8 to 10 member Committee under the Provincial Law Minister Raja Basharat.

The Committee would analyse all aspects of the festival and submit recommendations to the Chief Minister, Shahbaz Gill said.

The Spokesman said that the Punjab government would make the final decision accordingly with assurance that security and safety of the people remain uncompromised.
