ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: There is possibility of a meeting between Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his Indian Counterpart Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Russia, according to the Foreign Office.

The SCO summit is scheduled to take place in the Russian City of Ufa on July 8-10.

In his weekly press briefing in Islamabad on Thursday, the Foreign Office Spokesman Qazi Khalilullah said that the meeting between the two leaders cannot be ruled out.

However, the spokesman said that no side has yet contacted the other for the meeting.

The spokesman also reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to good neighborly relations with Afghanistan for peace and stability in the region.

“We will continue to support an Afghan led and Afghan owned peace and reconciliation process,” he said.

Qazi Khalilullah said that a peaceful, stable and prosperous Afghanistan is in Pakistan’s best interest. He said that non-interference in internal affairs of Afghanistan is the key pillar of Pakistan Afghan policy.

The foreign office spokesman said that the two sides are constructively engaged to rebuild mutual trust and understanding.

The spokesman said that both Pakistan and Afghanistan are cooperating to counter terrorism.

“Pakistan condemns terrorism in all its forms,” Qazi Khalilullah said.

Last month, a Pakistani security analyst Zaid Hamid was arrested in Saudi Arabia for making an alleged provocative speech in Madina criticizing the Saudi government. Later, he was reportedly awarded eight years imprisonment and 1000 lashes.

Qazi Khalilullah said that the Pakistan embassy in Riyadh has approached the Saudi authorities to confirm the sentence awarded to Zaid Hamid in Saudi Arabia. He said that it has also asked for consular access as well as the charges leveled against the analyst.
