It is worth mentioning that Justice Saqib Nisar-led Supreme Court bench in its verdict had reversed the judgements of the Lahore High Court (LHC) and the Trial Court, in which they had convicted Aasia Bibi for committing blasphemy in 2009 in Sheikhupura and thus awarded death penalty to her.

Following Aasia Bibi’s acquittal, the religious activists backed by Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) staged strong protests across the country including in Islamabad, which eventually ended with an agreement between the TLP and the Punjab government.

In the meantime, Qari Salaam filed a review petition in the Supreme Court, pleading the Apex Court to set aside the acquittal judgement.

Meanwhile, extra security measures have already been taken in the Federal Capital to void any untoward situation as there is a possibly of protests by religious parties in the wake of Supreme Court’s decision.
