NationalPakistan Army Chief condoles over death of US Senator John McCain

RAWALPINDI, Pakistan: The Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa has conveyed condolences to bereaved family of deceased US Republican Senator John McCain.

The 81-year-old John McCain passed away on Saturday following a battle with brain cancer.

“McCain was a distinguished war veteran and an accomplished representative of his country. A friend of Pakistan who believed in great potential of Pak-US relations for common good of both countries,” the COAS was quoted as saying by the Director General Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) Major General Asif Ghafoor on his Twitter account on Monday.

Belonging to the Republican Party but a fierce critic of his own party’s Presidential nominee Donald Trump, John McCain is widely considered as a war hero who also remained imprisoned during Vietnam War. He was the Republican nominee in 2008 US Presidential Election, which he lost to Barack Obama.

In a statement, the former US President Barack Obama also paid tribute to his onetime election opponent, and said that he and McCain, despite their completely different backgrounds and political differences, shared “a fidelity to something higher – the ideals for which generations of Americans and immigrants alike have fought, marched and sacrificed.”

"We will continue to stand firmly for ending violence against the Palestinians. Without a shadow of a doubt, we will continue to expose the abuses and sanctimony with which the US is handling the situation.
