ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The Chairman National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Qamar Zaman Chaudhry Tuesday said Bureau’s officers and officials should double their efforts in performing national duty and follow strict code of conduct and zero tolerance policy as per law.

While addressing a ceremony at NAB Sukkur, he said corruption not only causes delays in early completion of development projects but also causes huge losses to national exchequer.

It also increases inflation in the country decreasing the buying power of common man.

During his visit there, he said corruption is root cause of all the evils and added NAB has devised Partly Quantified Grading System (PQGS) to review and evaluate performance of all NAB Regional Bureaus about their strengths and weaknesses.

This initiative proved very encouraging and effective in enhancing performance of Regional Bureaus which has now become a regular part of Bureau’s working, he said, adding figures of complaints, inquiries and investigations became almost double as compared to same period of 2015 to 2016.

The comparative figures for the latest two and half years are indicative of hard work being put in by all ranks of NAB staff in an atmosphere of renewed energy and dynamism, where fight against corruption was being taken as a national duty.

Increase in number of complaints also reflects enhanced public trusted in the NAB.

The PILDAT in its report supports the position stated above as 42% people trusted NAB against 30 % for police and 29 % for government officials.

The recent report of Transparency International also rated Pakistan in Corruption Perception Index (CPI) from 126 to 117.

He said Pakistan has role model for SAARC countries in eradication of corruption and made first Chairman of SAARC countries Anti-Corruption Forum which was a great achievement for Pakistan.

The World Economic Forum and Mishal Pakistan according to Global Competitiveness Index of the World Economic Forum rated Pakistan from 126 to 122.

He said besides enforcement, special focus was, therefore, being given to awareness and prevention activities to educate people at large about ill effects of corruption.

He said youth is our asset and future of Pakistan. NAB has laid special emphases on youth.

More than 42,000 Character Building Societies (CBS) have been set up in Universities and Colleges.

More and more Universities/Colleges are joining hands with NAB in its countrywide campaign against corruption.

The Chairman NAB directed all officers/officials of NAB to adopt and demonstrate absolute fairness and transparency in discharge of their national duties.

He appreciated the performance of NAB Sukkur under supervision of DG Muhammad Altaf Bawany as NAB Sukkur is graded Very Good with 77.98 percent Operational Efficiency Index on basis of annual inspection conducted by Chairman’s Inspection & Monitoring Team (CI&MT).
