ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Pakistan army has been called in by the district administration after a flood-like situation emerged in Islamabad and Rawalpindi as torrential monsoon downpours lashed the twin cities.
The heavy rains uprooted multiple trees, plants, and billboards in both the cities, and their low-lying areas have been inundated.
The Deputy Commissioner Islamabad Muhammad Hamza Shafqaat said that flood has struck several areas in the Federal Capital.

Hamza Shafqaat said that the district administration is busy in clearing water from roads and drains, requesting the citizens to cooperate.

The DC Islamabad said that the Rawal Dam’s spillways are being opened, and announcements are being made in mosques asking the people dwelling around the Koran River and Soan River to stay away from the rivers banks today.

Hamza Shafqaat further said that Section 144 has been imposed barring the people from bathing in the rivers.
The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said that the heavy rains caused the high water level in Rawalpindi’s Nullah Lai and water accumulation in the E-11 Sector, Ismablaad.
The ISPR said that Pakistan army troops are busy in assisting the civil administration in rescue and relief efforts.
It said that contingencies plans are in place to meet any flood situation.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Imran Khan has tweeted that with the heavy monsoon rains, I want to alert and caution our citizens to take special care.
The prime minister said that I have also directed all the relevant response agencies including the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to be on high alert with ready and rapid emergency response actions.
The Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar has also issued an alert in view of the threat of flooding in Nullah Lai of Rawalpindi.
The Chief Minister has asked Rescue 1122 to put in place all the arrangements to deal with any emergency like situation.
Usman Buzdar said that the report should be submitted after the drainage of water in low-lying areas.
A Spokesperson of the Met Office told that 123 mm rain has been recorded in the Federal Capital. He said that the current rain spell will persist during the next three days.
