ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: A total of 3,656 accidents occurred on Motorways and National Highways across the Country during the last five years, causing deaths of 2,518 persons, the Senate was told.

The Minister for Communications Murad Saeed told the House in written while responding to a question by Senator Professor Dr Mehar Taj Roghani that from the year 2015 to 2019, 7,523 persons suffered injuries in 3,656 accidents occurred on Motorways and National Highways.

While giving year-wise breakup of accidents, deaths and injuries occurred separately on Motorways and Highways, the minister apprised that House that from 2015 to 2019, 1,593 accidents took place on Motorways in which 770 persons were killed whereas 3,252 received injuries.

Likewise, 2,063 accidents were reported on Highways which left 1,748 persons dead and 4,271 further wounded.

Details of accidents occurred on Motorways and National Highways

Murad Saeed further apprised the House that the drivers involved in the accidents are handed over to the local police of respective district for their medical examination and further legal proceedings.

The Minister for Communications also told that the issuance of vehicle fitness certificates for transport vehicles falls within the domain of the Provincial Transport Authorities/Regional Transport Authorities. However, the National Highways and Motorways Police (NHMP) also checks the physical fitness of the transport vehicles plying on motorways and highways. He told that the vehicles having vulnerable physical condition are also issued tickets in relevant codes.

Moreover, vehicles in poor physical condition/without fitness certificates are returned from entry points and are banned to ply on motorways.
