National AssemblyLawmakers lament banning of Holi celebration by HEC

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The Speaker National Assembly Raja Pervez Ashraf on Thursday issued a ruling to reverse the illegal and unconstitutional decision of the Higher Education Commission (HEC) to ban the celebration of Holi in educational institutions.

While taking notice regarding the ban imposed by HEC on Holi celebration in educational institutions, the NA Speaker cited the Objective Resolution and the Constitution of Pakistan (1973), which acknowledge the rights of minorities and ensure freedom for all religious sects to practice their religious activities.

The Speaker said that the Parliament will actively pursue the matter.

The MNA Shahida Rahmani also condemned the notification issued by the HEC.

“We are celebrating the 50th Golden Jubilee of the Constitution of Pakistan and this Constitution gives everyone the right to live together and celebrate freely regardless of caste, color and race,” she said.

Shahida Rahmani said that the festival of Holi is part of the Sindh culture which is celebrated with great enthusiasm.

“Banning it is reprehensible. We demand that strict action be taken against him,” the lawmaker said.
