ISLAMABAD: Muhammad Karim, Pakistan’s sole representative at the Winter Olympics, has left for Sochi, Russia, accompanied by a team manager and coach Zahid Farooq to represent his country in the alpine skiing competition.

The mega-event scheduled for February 7 to 23 will have as many as 98 categories from 15 winter sport disciplines.

The 18-year-old Karim, who grew up among some of the world’s highest mountains in the northern region of Gilgit-Baltistan, told media before leaving for Sochi that he will compete in the giant slalom category as he has dreamt of making a mark for Pakistan at the Winter Olympics this time around.

Karim will be only the second Pakistani ever to compete at the Winter Games following his friend Muhammad Abbas who finished 79th in the men’s giant slalom in the 2010 Games in Vancouver.
