The former Governor of State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) Dr. Reza Baqir was drawing a monthly salary of Rs 2500,000 (Rs 2.5 million) along with perks.

Dr. Reza Baqir had been appointed as the Governor of the State Bank of Pakistan by President of Pakistan Dr. Arif Alvi on May 4, 2019, for a period of three years.

His three-year term expired on May 4, 2022.

The Minister for Finance and Revenue Miftah Ismail shared this info with the National Assembly on July 28, 2022.

Though Reza Baqir has retired now; however, the position of the Governor SBP is still vacant.

Currently, Dr. Murtaza Syed, the senior most Deputy Governor of the SBP, is performing as the Acting Governor of SBP as per Section 10(2) of SBP (Amendment) Act, 2022.

Prior to this appointment as the Governor SBP, Dr. Reza Baqir had 18 years of experience with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and two years of experience with the World Bank.

In his capacity as the Governor Central Bank, he led several key new initiatives including COVID-19 relief package, Roshan Digital Account (RDA), National Payments Strategy, housing finance program, and Digital Financial Services including Raast and Banking on Equality etc.

Lauding the services of Dr. Reza for Pakistan, the Finance Minister Miftah Ismail wrote on Twitter on May 3, “I want to thank Reza for his service to Pakistan. He is an exceptionally qualified man & we worked well during our brief time together. I wish him the very best.”
