Two-day presidential election begins in Egypt

CAIRO: A two-day presidential election began in Egypt on Monday in which people are casting their votes to elect the new president.

The former military chief Abdul Fattah el-Sisi is expected to win. The leftist politician Hamdeen Sabahi is the only candidate running against Sisi in the election.

Sisi has been widely regarded as Egypt’s de facto leader since he toppled the first democratically-elected President Mohamed Morsi in July last year and cracked down on his Muslim Brotherhood.

On the other hand, the Muslim Brotherhood has boycotted the presidential election and said that holding the election will not give legitimacy to the criminal, in an apparent reference to the former military chief Abdul Fattah el-Sisi.
