Gaza aid conference to be held in Cairo on Sunday

CAIRO, Egypt: An international conference will be held in Egypt’s capital Cairo on Sunday to seek pledges of donations for reconstruction of the war-battered Gaza Strip.

The conference will be attended by the foreign ministers of 30 nations along with the US Secretary of State John Karry.

The UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon will preside the conference who is seeking a record $1.6 billion in aid to rebuild the Gaza strip.

The Palestinian government had unveiled a reconstruction plan for Gaza last week, calling for $4 billion to rebuild the war-hit territory.

Most of the amount is to be spent to build housing units for some 100,000 Palestinians who have been rendered homeless due to heavy bombing in their residential areas.
