CAIRO: The Chief Justice of Egypt’s Supreme Constitutional Court Adli Mansour took oath on Thursday as interim president of Egypt, hours after the Egyptian army ousted President Mohammed Morsi.

“I swear to preserve the system of the republic, and respect the constitution and law, and guard the people’s interests,” Mansour said as he took the oath of office at a ceremony in the Supreme Constitutional Court.

The head of Egypt’s armed forces General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi appointed Mansour as the interim head after suspending the constitution and ousting President Mohammad Morsi on Wednesday.

According to military decree, Mansour will serve as Egypt’s interim leader until a new president is elected. A date for that vote has yet to be set.
